When ChatGPT brought generative AI to the public in late 2022, newsrooms across the country tried to figure out what to do with it.
Three years later, a new report from the Knight Center for the Future of News offers one of the first systematic answers to the question of what they actually built and what it means.
“The News + AI Field Report: What News Organizations Built with AI, 2022–2025,” authored by Djordje Padejski, a journalism scholar, media innovation expert and Cronkite doctoral candidate, with support from ASU graduate students Presley McCaskill and Tufan Neupane, catalogs 160 AI projects launched by 101 U.S. news organizations between late 2022 and the end of 2025.
Its central finding: Newsrooms have largely used AI to do what they were already doing — only faster.
