After Power Failure, 'Charlotte (N.C.) Observer' to Resume Publishing

By: The Charlotte Observer plans to resume publishing Wednesday after a power failure prevented the Carolinas' largest newspaper on Tuesday from printing and delivering about 156,000 copies -- about 70 percent of its total circulation.

Home delivery customers who did not receive a Tuesday newspaper will get one with Wednesday's edition, Vice President of Circulation Jim Lamm said.

The power failure was traced to wires supplying electricity to the Observer's downtown printing presses. Observer officials said they tried to make onsite repairs early Tuesday morning before moving printing to a nearby Wall Street Journal plant.

Crews were delivering some papers Tuesday, particularly to stores and racks.

Duke Power restored electricity to the Observer's pressroom shortly before noon Tuesday. No other outages were reported in the area, a Duke spokesman said.

Many Observer subscribers were unable to reach the circulation department due to a high volume of calls.

"We deeply apologize to our readers," Lamm said.
