By: E&P Staff A contract signed with Agfa of Mortsel, Belgium, will convert operations at the Bangkok-based Daily News to full computer-to-plate workflow, making the paper the first in Thailand to adopt CTP.
The installation will include two Polaris XDV platesetters, N91v violet photopolymer plates, Sublima screening technology, Arkitex Producer and Newsdrive software to automate the workflow, and Arkitex AutoInk to integrate with EAE press controls for ink presetting.
The Daily News now uses three Agfa film imagesetters and ProImage Newsway production software. Since it was launched in 1964 by the family-owned Si-Phya Publishing Co. Ltd., circulation has grown from 40,000 to more than 700,000. Its four daily editions grow to five once a month month (and the circulation peaks at 800,000) when winning lottery numbers are published twice.
The XDV is a Polaris model designed to meet the high production speed requirements of newspapers in Asia with large-format presses. The Daily News uses 300 plates per day (100,000 square meters per year). Its executive director, Prasong Hetrakul, cited Agfa's regional service and support network and said Sublima screening will enable the paper to achieve printing quality unsurpassed among newspapers in Thailand.
