Agfa-ProImage Update

By: Jim Rosenberg Agfa-Gevaert and ProImage formally announced today the agreement whereby Agfa acquires all ProImage assets and staff. One result of the action is that Agfa will hereafter support three different workflow products.

Headquartered near Tel-Aviv, Israel, with its ProImage America affiliate in Princeton, N.J., the developer of browser-based digital workflow solutions for newspapers and printers (E&P Online, Sept. 3) was founded in 1995, employs 29 people worldwide, and had 2003 revenue of $6.7 million.

An Agfa spokesman reaffirmed the company's intention to "continue to support earlier workflow users" that had installed IntelliNet software, and to "continue with Arkitex," the Agfa workflow that succeeded IntelliNet. He termed Arkitex "a best-of-both-worlds product" derived from original work by Agfa and software from Autologic, which Agfa acquired a few years ago. At the same time, "ProImage will continue under its own name," the spokesman said, adding that it will sell its Newsway workflow product "through the same channels, with the same people and service."

Following comments to E&P last week, ProImage America President John Ialacci could not be reached immediately after the formal announcement to comment on the status of ProImage work with other software developers. Vio Worldwide Ltd. (which, like ProImage, conducts research and development in Israel) reports that it no longer partners with ProImage to market "an alternative means of page transmission using Vio's secure managed network."

ProImage also collaborated on a pressroom-automation project with the Press Controls Division of Swiss-Swedish engineering firm ABB. It was described as a strategic alliance that grew out of work for a German newspaper which included plateroom-management software integration.
