'AJC' Drops Three Strips in Comics Consolidation

Posted Wednesday, March 4, 2009 12:00 am

By: E&P Staff The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will combine its two Sunday Comics sections into one beginning March 15, reducing its comics from eight pages to six full-color pages.

Following the AJC?s recent readers poll on which comics to eliminate, the Atlanta daily is discontinuing ?Frazz,? ?DeFlocked? and ?Night Lights and Fairy Flights.?

Also, this Sunday, March 8, the Journal-Constitution will distribute its last TV Week booklet and will launch its new, full-color ?ajcTVweekly? section on March 15. It will continue to feature a half-page TV grid in the Monday through Thursday and Saturday Living sections and in its Go Guide on Friday.

?As media habits have changed and more people are using on-screen TV listings, the readership of TV Week has dropped,? the paper said in a report. ?It has become cost prohibitive to continue distributing an in-depth TV book supplement when the majority of readers, about 70 percent, do not use it regularly.?

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
