Albany 'Times Union' Looks to Lose 30 Jobs

Posted
By: E&P Staff Today, the Times-Union in Albany, N.Y., joined the ever-growing list of newspapers offering buyouts to their newsrooms. Senior Editor M. Monica Bartoszek broke the news on the T-U Editors' Blog.

The buyout plan, which is voluntary and is open to all employees, is the latest in a series of plans offered to newspaper employees around the
country. Employees have until June 16th to accept.

The exact terms of the buyout were not made public, though Bartoszek did say that longtime employees would be offered extra incentive to accept the buyout?s financial package.

Quoting an e-mail from Times-Union publisher Mark Aldam, Bartoszek wrote: ?The goal of the program is to reduce full-time staffing by at least 30 positions. If we do not achieve the targeted staff reductions through this action, involuntary job eliminations or layoffs may be necessary ? we must accelerate our efforts to lower the cost base of the Times Union.

?We find ourselves to be a company in transition: one that is growing robustly on some fronts, while experiencing contraction in others. Despite the disruptive economic environment, we plan to accelerate our transition from a traditional newspaper to a multimedia company."
