Times Union of Albany, N.Y., has named Rex Smith editor. Smith, 49, succeeds Jeff Cohen, who left to become editor of the
Houston Chronicle.
Both papers are owned by the Hearst Corp. of New York.
Smith was previously managing editor/news. Mary Fran Gleason, managing editor/features and sports has been appointed to the new position of managing editor. She will report to Smith.
Publisher David White said Smith's newspaper career spans 23 years, including 15 in the Albany region. "He knows the community and understands its people, and he has been a vital player on the team that helped the
Times Union win recognition as the best newspaper in its circulation class in New York state," White said in a statement.
Smith previously served as Albany bureau chief for
Newsday, Melville, N.Y., and editor of
The Record in Troy, N.Y., before joining the
Times Union in 1995.
Gleason, 47, joined the
Times Union in 2001 after working for Syracuse Newspapers.
