Albuquerque JOA Selects WoodWing for Newsroom

By: E&P Staff For their new editorial workflow solution, the jointly operated Albuquerque Journal and Albuquerque Tribune selected Smart Connection Enterprise, from WoodWing Software of Zandaam, The Netherlands.

The papers have used a XyWrite-Photoshop-QuarkXPress editorial system assembled in house. Detroit-based WoodWing USA's CEO, Brian Kruger, said WoodWing's Smart Connection Enterprise "offered them the tools they needed to do it all again, but this time, built around InDesign and InCopy" and customized to meet their particular needs.

Switching to Adobe System's InDesign and InCopy, the papers sought an open-source solution, and WoodWing's Enterprise Server "allows us to use Suse Linux, PHP, and MySQL to implement an editorial solution," said Journal and Tribune Data Systems Director Arthur Duran.

Circulating 107,000 weekday copies, the 125-year-old morning Journal is the state's largest daily. It combined business functions and production operations with E.W. Scripps' 72-year-old evening Tribune in 1933. Their agency, Albuquerque Publishing Co., is the country's oldest joint operating agreement.
