We’re thrilled to announce that Alex Klavens is joining the Data Journalism team as a database developer. Alex will focus on building databases and data-driven tools that expand the newsroom’s ability to cover major storylines.

Alex first joined The Times in 2023 and comes to us from the Data Platforms team, where he was a senior software engineer working on our internal data systems for product and business analytics. He also helped build tools for homepage headline experimentation and data pipelines for a project digitizing decades of the print newspaper.

Before joining The Times, Alex worked at several tech startups building data-driven products, including tools for journalists and researchers to monitor public records. He also spent a summer covering local breaking news at NPR station WBUR in Boston.

Alex earned a B.A. in Government and Computer Science from Connecticut College, where he was the news editor of the student newspaper. He is also an M.S. candidate at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
