Alt-Weeklies Launch One-Stop Site

Posted
By: Jennifer Saba The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies announced today the launch of AltWeeklies.com, a Web site that aggregates content from 125 member papers.

?At a time when many others in the media are gorging on celebrity gossip and transcribing the views of unnamed 'senior administration officials,' alternative newsweeklies continue to provide smart, engaging coverage of serious issues delivered with personality and a point-of-view. At Altweeklies.com, you'll be able to see it all in one place,? says AAN executive director, Richard Karpel, in a statement.

The site serves as a syndication outlet as well. Papers can buy stories from other member papers without having to pay the AAN a processing fee. Instead, the money goes directly to the paper or the writer.

Any member alt weekly is free to post as many stories as it chooses; Editor Ruth Hammond organizes the content and decides what will get highlighted. She said that she also pulls about one third of the content from papers.

The site is refreshed daily though Hammond said that Thursday -- the day most alt weeklies publish -- is when some 30 to 40 new stories are posted.
