Amanpour, Oppenheimer, Whitaker Named to CPJ Board

By: E&P Staff Christiane Amanpour of CNN, Andres Oppenheimer of the Miami Herald, and Newsweek Editor Mark Whitaker have joined the board of the Committee to Project Journalists.

"Our new board members bring a wealth of international experience to CPJ," David Laventhol, the committee's board chairman, said in a statement. "They will help us greatly to advocate for journalists and press freedoms in peril all over the world."

Oppenheimer, who is the foreign affairs columnist for The Miami Herald, is syndicated in more than 40 U.S. and Latin American newspapers. He previously served as a foreign correspondent and the Mexico City bureau chief for the Herald, and he shared a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting in the Iran-Contra affair.

Amanpour, who has won seven EmmyAwards, is CNN's chief international correspondent. Whitaker has been editor of Newsweek since 1998. The magazine has won four National Magazine Awards in his tenure. He has reported from Central America, the Falklands, the Middle East, South Africa, and the U.S.S.R.
