Christopher L. Shertzer has been named group publisher for American Community Newspapers II, LLC’s Northern Virginia Division.

Shertzer most recently served as vice president of outside sales for Pennysaver Inc., the East Coast independent weekly shopping publication. He also has worked for Southern Maryland Newspapers.

In his new capacity, Shertzer will be responsible for ACN’s Northern Virginia publications, which include the weekly Leesburg Today, Ashburn Today, Arlington Sun Gazette and Great Falls, McLean, Oakton, Vienna Sun Gazette; the monthly newspapers Middleburg Life and Loudoun Business; and the quarterly Loudoun Magazine. ACN publications have a mailed circulation of more than 174,000 in Northern Virginia.

The announcement was made by ACN Board Member Frank H. Shepherd, who is overseeing the company’s Northern Virginia cluster as the board searches for a new CEO following the resignation of Gene Carr earlier this month.

“We are very fortunate to have an executive of Chris's ability join our NVA group at such a critical time for all media companies, especially newspapers and magazines,” Shepherd said in a statement. “We are dedicated to growing our cluster in and around Loudoun and Fairfax counties and will rely on Chris to seek out additional acquisitions that would add strategic value to our stakeholders.”

American Community Newspapers II LLC operates in Minneapolis-St. Paul; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; and Suburban Washington D.C./Northern Virginia. The company’s 86 newspapers and 14 niche publications reach approximately 1.4 million households in the suburban communities surrounding these cities.
