Newspapers may be whacking away at the space and number of cartoons in their pages, but The Washington Post wants to launch a promising artist on “a path to become the next rising cartoonist.”

The Post has launched “America’s Next Great Cartoonist Contest.”

Says the Post: “Budding cartoonists looking for their big break can submit six original, unpublished single- or multi-panel cartoons by June 4.”

Oh, editorial cartoonists need not apply.  But anything else goes, the newspaper says.

Among the judges are "Doonesbury" creator Garry Trudeau, "Pearls Before Swine" creator Stephan Pastis, and "Cul de Sac" creator Richard Thompson. Judges will select 10 finalists and offer their comments. Then readers will vote.

American Idol-style, five cartoonists will advance to the next round and be asked to respond to judges’ comments, flesh out their characters and produce a color Sunday comic on deadline. Readers will then vote again.

On or about July 15, the winner will be announced. The winner’s strip will be published daily for a month in the Style section and the Comic Riffs blog of the Post.

The winner, to be announced on or around July 15, will get an opportunity to create a comic strip to be published daily for one month in the print Style section and in the Comic Riffs blog of The Washington Post. The winner will also receive one-on-one consultation with a judge.
