Another Comic Strip/Comic Book Collaboration for 'Baldo'

Posted
By: E&P Staff Independent comic book superhero El Muerto will make a special appearance in the "Baldo" strip to coincide with the Day of the Dead holiday.

The storyline begins the week of Oct. 27, and ends with a Sunday comic on Nov. 2. Day of the Dead celebrations occur on Nov. 1 and 2.

"El Muerto" ("The Dead One") is created by Los Angeles-based artist Javier Hernandez and published through his own Los Comex imprint. It follows the story of 21-year-old Diego de la Muerte, who, while on his way to a Dia de los Muertos festival, is abducted by Aztec gods only to return to Earth a year later with supernatural powers. A film version starring Wilmer Valderrama was released last year.

"The Day of the Dead is a special holiday for lots of Latinos and we thought this was a unique way for Baldo and his family to pray for and remember a special loved one in their lives," said Hector Cantu, who does "Baldo" with Carlos Castellanos for more than 225 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.

"We've enjoyed teaming up with comic creators in the past," added Castellanos.

In 2005, the "Baldo" co-creators collaborated with Richard Dominguez on a special sequence featuring Dominguez's El Gato Negro independent comic book superhero. The next year, "Baldo" featured characters from Lela Lee's weekly alternative comic "Angry Little Girls!"
