Another Editorial Cartoonist -- Chip Bok -- Takes a Buyout

Posted
By: Dave Astor Chip Bok of the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal will soon be yet another editorial cartoonist leaving a longtime staff position.

The news about Bok's decision to take a buyout was reported late Thursday afternoon by Daily Cartoonist blogger Alan Gardner, who said the Ohio creator's last day at the paper will be Oct. 13. Bok has been with the Beacon Journal for 22 years.

"Everyone knows that the newspaper industry is grim right now," Bok told Gardner. "The rust belt is perhaps more grim than elsewhere."

Bok will continue doing cartoons for Creators Syndicate and work on other projects, according to Gardner's post.

Among the other editorial cartoonists who recently took a buyout or got laid off were Stuart Carlson of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jim Borgman of The Cincinnati Enquirer, Richard Crowson of the Wichita Eagle, and Peter Dunlap-Shohl of The Anchorage Daily News.

There are now fewer than 80 staff editorial cartoonists on newspapers, compared with hundreds decades ago.
