AP and National Sports Content Sharing Network Announce Distribution Agreement

The Associated Press and the National Sports Content Sharing Network today announced that AP will become the exclusive distribution channel for NSCSN members to exchange sports stories with one another.

The NSCSN is a group of about 55 U.S. and Canadian newspapers that share local sports content. Under the new agreement, NSCSN members will use AP's Marketplace distribution service to do so.

In this first for AP Marketplace, NSCSN members will have access to an exclusive, national sharing module within Marketplace. By using Marketplace and AP's content enrichment services, NSCSN members will be able to establish dedicated feeds of their sports content for easier sharing among the group’s members.

"I'm very excited about using AP Marketplace," said Roy Hewitt, sports editor of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland and a founder of NSCSN.  "It will make the process less complicated and, therefore, more useful to our members. The new partnership also should encourage more newspapers to participate, since we all understand the benefits of sharing content with each other."

Kate Butler, AP vice president for U.S. Newspaper Markets, said: "The makeup of the NSCSN and its specialized need for sharing content gave AP an opportunity to provide a service through Marketplace that we are uniquely positioned to offer as a cooperative."

"AP Marketplace will make it easier for NSCSN members to share content with each other and to find sports coverage suited to their local market interests," Butler added. "We're pleased we could help.''

Nearly 800 AP member newspapers have joined AP Marketplace. The service allows newspapers to easily post content they want to share with one another. Newspapers access Marketplace through AP Exchange, an AP browser.

In the new arrangement, NSCSN members will be able to identify those stories they want to share within their group and post them to an area accessible only to NSCSN members. AP member newspapers will also be able to post their other content to the larger Marketplace audience.

In addition, AP members that are part of NSCSN will be able to search for topics across all of their AP entitlements, their Marketplace entitlements and their NSCSN stories. That means the new arrangement will give AP members in NSCSN even more content to choose from to make their sports sections more locally relevant.

About NSCSN

The National Sports Content Sharing Network was formed in early 2010 in response to the growing need to share content with other newspapers. The free service grew out of discussions at Associated Press Sports Editors conferences. Through statewide and regional networks, sports editors understood the benefits and financial necessities of sharing. NSCSN participation benefits its members' readers by providing locally relevant coverage of sports stories from another perspective.
