By: E&P Staff The Associated Press has launched a new Mobile News Network application for BlackBerry smart phones. The new application from Research In Motion can be downloaded for free at bb.apnews.com.
The Mobile News Network provides anytime access to international, national, and local news content from about 1,000 media sources. The application was introduced in May and works on all BlackBerry phones.
"More than 20 million Americans accessed news on their mobile devices in July, up 58 percent from 13 million from the same month last year," said senior analyst for comScore M:Metrics, Mark Donovan. "BlackBerry owners, in particular, are voracious consumers of news, with 40 percent accessing news on their device."
The Mobile News Network is the first project released by AP?s Digital Cooperative, an initiative specializing in developing new digital outlets for news produced by AP members. AP teamed up with Portland-based FreeRange Communications to develop the news application for use on BlackBerry smart phones.
AP recently announced that the Mobile News Network received more than 16 million page views and more than one million local stories were read in the month of August. For the month of September, the Mobile News Network received more than 26 million page views and more than 1.5 million local stories were read.
Today, the Mobile News Network covers 100 top market areas and currently includes 1,004 member and affiliate outlets.
