AP Will Break Story Wednesday on Use of Foster Children in AIDS Experiments

By: E&P Staff The Associated Press will report late Wednesday, after more than four months of research on the use of foster children in AIDS experiments, that most of the children never got the benefit of a basic protection afforded by federal law and required by some states -- an independent advocate to monitor their care, their side effects and their wishes as they moved between homes or facilities.

The AP investigative team interviewed foster care and research officials and filied records requests in several states to examine the use of foster children in AIDS experiments.

AP's findings are included in a package of stories, graphics, video,
audio and photos that will move May 4.

The main story is written by Washington reporter John Solomon. It examines the nationwide practice, including interviews with researchers, foster care agencies and parents of children who went through testing with foster kids.
