API Picks 3 Newspapers as Training Sites

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Learning Newsroom at the American Press Institute (API) has selected its three training sites for 2004: The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Ind.; The Citizen-Times in Asheville, N.C.; and The Telegraph in Nashua, N.H. The training program aims to increase career development opportunities.

The Learning Newsroom, a joint venture of API and the American Society of Newspaper Editors, is funded by a $1 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. As many as 12 newspapers will be pilot sites, but in its first year, the program is focusing on smaller market papers.

"These are top-notch newspapers today," said Andrew B. Davis, president and executive director of API, in a press release. "Their executives recognize this is training with the potential to help them become even better prepared to adapt to future challenges."

The Learning Newsroom is part of a $10 million training initiative funded by the Knight Foundation, launched in 2003 after 50 journalism groups nationwide called for a unified effort to increase both the amount of training available and the news industry's investment in it.
