By: Joe Strupp Associated Press Managing Editors is co-sponsoring a series of webinars to help reporters plan coverage of the ongoing economic issues and the federal bailouts being instituted.
Along with the Associated Press and the Sunlight Foundation, APME is offering the online training in several sessions slated to begin next week.
"There's no travel involved. Your staff can participate from the comfort of their newsroom workstations," APME President David Ledford wrote in an e-mail promoting the program. "And unlike our investigative work last year on Congressional earmarks in the federal budget -- in which 75 newspapers published stories one Sunday in June -- there's no reason to wait to publish en masse. Use the knowledge gained in training as soon as you feel comfortable."
"There are many paths for the trillions of dollars in federal money to flow into, with improvements scheduled for roads, bridges, the nation's power grid, broadband expansion, health issues and more cops on the beat, to name a few," Ledford added. "Our goal is to acquire databases as they come available, and help you interpret them. We expect this work to continue all through 2009."
The first online seminars will be held March 11, 12, 16, and 17 and focus on The Treasury Department's (TARP) Troubled Asset Relief Program and the FDIC's Temporary Liquidity Guarantee Program.
