A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld Thomson Reuters’ copyright victory against Ross Intelligence, Reuters reports. The Third Circuit rejected the former legal-research competitor’s fair-use defense over Westlaw material used to train an AI-powered search engine. The dispute concerns headnotes that summarize legal points in court opinions.
The court’s reasoning remained sealed at the time of Reuters’ report. The decision is a significant development in litigation over AI training, but this case concerns a legal search tool rather than generative AI. It therefore should not be read as resolving the separate lawsuits brought by news publishers against chatbot companies.
