April Ad Volume Up Slightly at 'Wall Street Journal'

By: E&P Staff Dow Jones reported that ad revenue at its flagship paper The Wall Street Journal, including the Weekend Edition, grew 8.3% in April on a 3.8% increase in ad volume.

Lineage in the financial category grew 17.2% due to increases in wholesale, retail, insurance, and tombstone advertising. General advertising lineage advanced 16.2% on increases in corporate, travel, healthcare, and luxury goods while media, auto and professional services advertising declined. Classified advertising lineage rose 2.2% and was impacted by one less Friday in April 2006. Technology advertising lineage dropped 29.7%.

At Ottaway Newspapers, ad revenue was up 5.3% for the month. Increased ad rates and higher preprint and advertising revenue offset a 5.4% decline in ad volume. The auto and help wanted categories, national, and display volumes were weak, offset by gains in real estate and legal advertising.
