By: E&P Staff The Associated Press announced the winners of its 2006 Gramling Awards today. The winners were chosen from the wire service's editorial, technical, and administrative staff.
The Oliver S. Gramling Awards have been awarded for the past 13 years to honor extraordinary contributions of AP staff members. The namesake of the awards was an AP newsman and executive who developed the first radio wire for AP in 1941.
The winners are:
For the Gramling Journalism Awards, with a purse of $10,000 each:
- Kit Frieden: Health and science editor.
- Rafael Wober: AP Television News video journalist.
For the Gramling Achievement Awards, with a purse of $10,000 each:
- Ted Anthony: Asap editor.
- Lynn Dombek: Director of the News Research Center.
For the Gramling Spirit Awards, with a purse of $3,000 each:
- J. Scott Applewhite: Member of Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and the Senate Press Photographers Gallery.
- Howard Gros: Services & Technology south regional director.
- Eloy Aguilar: Regional Administrator for Mexico/Central America.
- Clarence Roy-Macaulay: Sierra Leone correspondent.
For the Gramling Scholarship Award, with a purse of $3,000:
- Michael Stobbe: Medical writer in Atlanta, Ga.
