By: E&P Staff Barely six months after it was founded, the online-only Arizona Guardian has won an Excellence in State House Reporting Award from the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors.
The Guardian was recognized for its daily column "Guardian Angel," to which the entire staff contributes. The Guardian launched on Jan. 5 of this year, and had less than five months of material from which to choose a submission. The contest deadline was May 1.
"This is awesome," Dennis Welch, reporter and the Guardian's co-owner, said in a statement. "It's pretty cool that we've been in business only six months and we're already being recognized by a national group."
The Guardian's reporting and editing core consists of Welch, Patti Epler, Paul Giblin, Mary K. Reinhart. All four are veteran Arizona poltical reporters and editors who were laid off by the East Valley Tribune in October 2008. The four, along with longtime state Democratic strategist Bob Grossfield, are equal co-owners of the Guardian. Grossfield serves as publisher, business and marketing manager, and webmaster.
The Guardian charges $30/ month for access to the site's news coverage. It also offers a $150/ month for a so-called "professional" subscription aimed at lawmakers, lobbyists and companies that offers breaking news e-mail and text alerts. A "non-profit professional" subscription costs $120/month. All subscriptions run for a period of six months.
