'Arizona Republic' Automates Entire Page Flow with Harland Simon

Posted
By: E&P Staff Prima Esprit from Harland Simon, Oak Brook, Ill., now drives all Arizona Republic press set-ups. One individual on one platform can create press layouts for the Deer Valley and Mesa plants and provide their output systems' plate and cylinder information.

The arrangement allows Gannett's Phoenix daily to manage output waste while understanding press configurations and driving plates automatically to specific plants, presses, and even individual cylinders.

Republic System Services Director Bill Hack wanted to further fine-tune the process, allowing generation of non-standard runs while still taking advantage of third-party integration. "We had Esprit as an auto-run process," he explained to E&P, adding that "we couldn't get 100% of the product through."

Earlier this year Harland Simon implemented Prima impositioning from its Prima MS suite, allowing the paper to modify the Esprit-generated imposition while still allowing, from a single location, the driving of press set-ups to Rockwell press controls and plate output to the ProImage workflow system.

"We now are capable of driving our output system with XML page plans created from information derived from Prima Esprit," Hack said in a statement. "Pages know where to go, based on what product is defined from the press jobs established in Esprit, allowing us to bar code all plates and drop them into trays on our CTP units. 100% of our page flows are automated from the newsroom to the press plant's trays."
