By: (AP) Ward Bushee, editor of
The Cincinnati Enquirer, was named Monday as editor of
The Arizona Republic.
Bushee replaces Tom Callinan, who in turn replaces Bushee as editor in Cincinnati. Both papers are owned by Gannett Co. Inc.
The Arizona Republic, with an average weekday circulation of about 450,000, is Arizona's largest newspaper and the largest community newspaper owned by Gannett based in McLean, Va. Bushee's title will be editor and vice president of news.
"Ward has served Gannett well in a variety of capacities during his career," said Sue Clark-Johnson, chairman, chief executive officer and publisher of the
Republic and senior group president of Gannett's Pacific Group.
Before joining the
Enquirer, Bushee was executive editor and later editor of Gannett's
Reno Gazette-Journal in Nevada from 1990 to 1999.
He served as executive editor of the
Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S.D., from 1986 to 1990 and held management positions at Gannett Westchester Newspapers in New York,
USA Today, the
Marin Independent Journal in Novato, Calif., and
The Californian in Salinas, Calif.
Clark-Johnson noted that Bushee was named Gannett's editor of the year twice, received the President's Ring for editorial leadership nine times and helped guide the Cincinnati newspaper to a runner-up finish for the James K. Batten Award for Excellence in Civic Journalism last year.
The Arizona Republic was among the papers taken over by Gannett in August 2000 when it bought Central Newspapers Inc. for $2.6 billion. Callinan was brought in as editor in November 2000 from the Gannett-owned
Rochester (N.Y.)
Democrat and Chronicle.
Clark-Johnson said Callinan did an excellent job in Phoenix. She said he played a key role in guiding the
Republic's transition to Gannett ownership and in launching the newspaper's partnership with Gannett-owned Phoenix television station KPNX.
Gannett owns 94 daily newspapers with a combined circulation of 7.7 million. They include
USA Today, which at 2.2 million subscribers, has the nation's largest daily circulation.
