'Arizona Republic' Redesigns Web Site

Posted
By: E&P Staff The online home of The Arizona Republic, azcentral.com, launched a major site-wide redesign this week. It is the first design overhaul for azcentral.com in four years.

"The changes we unveiled on azcentral.com this week, in terms of both a new design and new features, will be a benefit to both our advertisers and our audience," said Leon Levitt, the Republic's executive vice president/digital media. "We listened to our users about the content and features that mattered most to them, and we renewed our commitment to making our clients' advertising messages as effective as possible."

In addition to an updated look, this redesign also makes changes to the site's advertising space. New, larger ad units match standards set by the Internet Advertising Bureau's Universal Ad Package. Fewer ads on each page of the site will reduce clutter and improve ads' effectives. And azcentral.com will no longer serve pop-up or pop-under ads, bowing to user feedback and the growing popularity of pop-up blockers.

Taking advantage of the Phoenix area's high penetration of home high-speed Internet access -- it has the second highest penetration rate in the nation, according to Nielsen//NetRatings -- the redesigned azcentral.com includes some new multimedia features, including a special section for photo showcases and videoclips (http://photos.azcentral.com). There is also a new, searchable events calendar to complement the newspaper's popular entertainment section.

azcentral.com launced in 1995 as the online home of The Arizona Republic, and today it also provides content from Phoenix NBC affiliate KPNX-TV, Spanish-language paper La Voz, and the Arizona Business Gazette.
