By: E&P Staff A classified information alert on terrorist activity marked "Do NOT release to the public or media" was accidentally released to the media by a lieutenant in the Special Operations Section of the Pima County, Ariz., Sheriff?s Department, the Arizona Daily Star reported today.
In a move that the Star compared to the silent film comedy team the Keystone Kops, Lt. Karl Woolridge sent an e-mail labeled "Do NOT release to the public or media" to the wrong e-mail group. What should have gone to an internal e-mail list at the Sheriff?s Department was instead sent to the DUI task force, which includes the local media.
The Star chose not to publish the contents of the alert, which Sheriff?s Capt. Oscar Miranda said was not terribly damaging to begin with. The paper did say that the alert contained information for officers regarding suspicious activities that could preclude terrorist attacks. The activities were in conjunction with specific weapons, ammunition, chemicals, and flight manuals that could prove suspect.
Miranda told the Star that though his department isn?t severely hampered by Woolridge?s foolish mistake, he still had specific punishment in mind for the lieutenant:
"We're going to slap him silly."
