'Arkansas Democrat-Gazette' Institutes Furloughs

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock is the latest daily paper to institute unpaid furloughs in an effort to cut costs, the paper reported.

In order to meet a 5% payroll cut, the paper is requiring each employee to take off one work day out of every 20, Executive Editor Griffin Smith said in a memo distributed to newsroom employees.

The furloughs follow last week's elimination of seven newsroom employees. Other departments at the newspaper also have reduced staff and expenses, the paper reported.

?Grievous though this loss was, many more of our colleagues? jobs would be eliminated without the Furlough Plan announced today,? Smith said in the memo, the story added.

The furloughs will begin with the pay period that starts March 10, the story reported. It affects salaried employees and hourly workers who average 40 hours per week. It does not impact part-time staffers or those who average less than 40 hours per week, the story said.
