By: E&P Staff Amy Schlesing, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's embedded reporter in Iraq, is the 2008 winner of the Ernie Deane Award for valor in journalism, an award intended to honor exceptional Arkansas journalists.
The award is named for Ernie Deane, the former Arkansas Gazette reporter who originated the "Arkansas Traveler" column in 1956. Deane was information officer for Gen. George Patton during World War II.
He was later a University of Arkansas journalism teacher and alumnus. The award was established after his death in 1991.
"I am humbled and honored by this award," Schlesing wrote in an e-mail to the Ernie Deane Committee from Camp Slayer in Baghdad. She is embedded now with the Arkansas National Guard's 39th Infantry Brigade, and has been in Iraq for long periods since 2004.
