Arkansas Democrat-Gazette launches Philanthropy Project to support community journalism

In a bold move to bolster its commitment to community journalism, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has unveiled a new Philanthropy Project designed to secure sustainable funding through reader donations. Announced on Tuesday, August 27, the campaign aims to raise $100,000 over the next 100 days to support local news reporting that deeply engages with the issues most important to Arkansans.

“We hope this project will contribute to creating sustainable funding for the newspaper for years into the future,” said Nat W. Lea, president and chief executive officer of WEHCO Media, the owner of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “We plan to consider this type of plan for the other newspapers as well. We are urging our readers to help us with an initial goal of $100,000. Hopefully, we will raise much more and be able to establish new capabilities in our news coverage.”

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s approach mirrors successful efforts by other family-owned newspapers. The Seattle Times has raised around $10 million since launching its philanthropy campaign in 2013, while the Charleston Post and Courier has gathered $2.5 million since 2020. These initiatives have provided critical support to ensure robust local reporting and have served as a model for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s efforts.

The campaign underscores the vital role of local journalism in fostering a well-informed community. As stated in their advertising campaign, “Local news coverage is the foundation of a healthy and vibrant community. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette digs deeper into topics that matter most to Arkansans. We ask for your support to ensure this work continues.”

In exchange for their support, donors will be recognized by name in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, celebrating their investment in transparency and accountability. The newspaper encourages contributions as an “investment in the stories that shape our state,” underscoring the importance of local journalism in maintaining a democratic society.

For those interested in contributing, donations can be made at arcommunitynews.org. Each donation will help ensure that the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette can continue to deliver the kind of in-depth reporting that holds power accountable and informs the public.

With this campaign, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette hopes to set a new precedent for how local newspapers can thrive in the digital age, ensuring that they remain a cornerstone of their communities for years to come.
