Arrest in Fla. Newspaper Carrier's Murder

Posted
By: E&P Staff A convicted murderer was arrested yesterday morning in connection with the death of Daniel P. DeStefano, the Fort Pierce Tribune newspaper carrier who was shot Tuesday.

The suspect, Steven Douglas Hayward, 36, is accused of shooting DeStefano during his paper route. DeStefano died Wednesday after emergency surgery at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute.

Hayward was released from prison in November after serving a 16-year sentence for second-degree murder. Acting on a tip, police found Hayward at a boarding house. He has admitted to being at the scene and struggling with DeStefano, police say. But further details remain unknown, including how Hayward was shot in the right hand and what happened to the licensed .357-caliber revolver DeStefano used in defense.

Police will charge Hayward with first-degree murder, robbery with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and breaking into DeStefano's car.
