Arthur Dommen, Former 'LA Times' Correspondent, Dead at 71

Former Los Angeles Times foreign correspondent Arthur Dommen died Dec. 15 in Washington, D.C.

Dommen joined the Times 30 years ago as bureau chief in Tokyo. He later served in the same capacity in New Delhi before covering the Vietnam War until 1971.

After leaving the Times, that paper reported, Dommen earned a doctorate in agricultural economics and went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he edited the 'World Agriculture Situation and Outlook Report.'

Focusing on underdeveloped regions, Dommen produced studies on sub-Saharan Africa and Central America while at the department. Upon retiring, he authored a lengthy political history of Indochina during the periods of French and U.S. influence.
