By: Nekoro Gomes Brothers Scott and Jeff Asbach resigned from their positions as publisher and general manager of The Mesabi Daily News in Virginia, Minn., on Friday.
Their departure is part of a restructuring effort by parent company, Minn.-based Superior Publishing Co., to centralize production at a new print press facility in Hibbing, Minn., according to Superior CEO Charles Johnson.
Administration Manager Shelly Lindberg, Advertising Director Chris Knight, and Executive Editor Bill Hanna will handle management duties at the Virginia-based daily.
Johnson says other cuts have been made as a result of the strategy to move printing operations to the million-dollar facility. Superior also owns newspapers and weekly shoppers in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Currently, the News print press in Virginia is being prepared for disassembly and the paper has been printed out of the six-month-old Hibbing production center for the past two weeks. Superior closed another press in Grand Rapids, Mich., a year ago.
The Asbachs' departure caps a 39-year career at the News, as well as two generations of family involvement. Their father Larry Asbach was a former owner of the paper.
