'Ask' Force Grows In Numbers

By: Dave Astor The advice-column category continues to get more crowded with the introduction of a feature from Tribune Media Services.

TMS is syndicating "Ask Sadie" by Marnie Winston-Macauley, who has a master's degree in social work and hosts the radio show "Ask Sadie Live." Each of her columns includes a bulleted "Life Strategies" section.

Winston-Macauley's clients include The Sun of Baltimore and several other newspapers. TMS noted that, in the aftermath of Ann Landers' June 22 death, it has made sales to about 50 papers of "Ask Sadie" and other advice and special-interest columns -- including "Ask Beth" by psychotherapist Peg Winship and "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" by best-selling author John Gray, among others. Landers' column ran in about 1,200 papers.

Independently syndicated "Ask Rhona" advice columnist Rhona Raskin is also getting more sales in her native Canada as well as the U.S. For instance, she recently won a replace-Landers contest held by the Winnipeg Free Press in Manitoba.

Raskin is a registered clinical counselor who hosts the "Rhona at Night" radio show. A TV program is reportedly in the works for this fall.

Waymo’s model makes the case for AI, with measurable consumer benefits

What can a self-driving car teach news publishers about AI? Quite a lot, according to Guy Tasaka. How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
