ASNE-NAA Add Speakers, Prepare for Big Crowd

By: E&P Staff Several new speakers have been confirmed for the upcoming annual conventions of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Newspaper Association of America, April 20-23, in Washington, D.C., including Senators John McCain, Orrin Hatch and Patrick Leahy, and former Treasury secretary Robert Rubin.

This is the first time the editors and publishers groups have held concurrent conventions with joint sessions in the 83-year history of ASNE.

Previously announced speakers include President George Bush, Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry; Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld; and Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Sen. McCain will be interviewed by Marvin Kalb.

President Bush is scheduled to speak at a joint luncheon held in conjunction with The Associated Press on Wednesday, April 21.

In a joint NAA/ASNE session Thursday, April 22, Sens. Hatch and Leahy will discuss freedom of information issues. Another combined morning session will focus on journalistic ethics and standards. Rumsfeld
will address the groups at a 12:30 luncheon.

Sen. Kerry will address the editors at their closing luncheon on Friday, April 23.

ASNE attendance is expected to be the highest in more than four years, according to Executive Director Scott Bosley, who says 540 paid guests are confirmed with estimates that the attendance will surpass 600 by the opening events next week. That would be the largest in recent years, with only 525 attending last year's gathering in New Orleans and about 575 at each of the two previous Washington, D.C., conferences in 2002 and 2001.
