By: E&P Staff Asustek Computer Inc., the Taiwan-based developer of the Netbook, is prepared to launch what it expects to be the lowest-cost e-reader -- with a two-page, full-color display.
The Sunday Times of London reported that Asus President Jerry Shen said his company aims to release the device -- possibly in several versions -- before year's end. The report said a low-end model could be priced under 100 British pounds, or $165.
The Asus Eee Reader would resemble a printed book, opening at a hinged spine, with pages turned by touching the screen. According to the Times, users also would have the option of seeing a publication's page on one screen and the Web on another. One screen also could double as a keypad for using the device like a laptop computer.
The manufacturer also may include a Web camera, speakers and a microphone for Skype Internet telephony.
