By: Dave Astor Religious officials and editorial cartoonists will discuss the Danish cartoon controversy in two separate sessions at next month's Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention.
The AAEC gathering runs June 7-10 in Denver's Magnolia Hotel, and is being co-hosted by The Denver Post's Mike Keefe (syndicated by Cagle Cartoons) and the Rocky Mountain News' Ed Stein (syndicated by United Media).
AAEC President Clay Bennett told E&P today that the panel of religious officials will include representatives from Islamic, Jewish, and Christian groups. They'll talk about the Danish cartoons as well as how religion is portrayed in other cartoons.
"We've invited people who've had problems with depictions in cartoons," said Bennett, the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for The Christian Science Monitor and Christian Science Monitor News Service. "We want to see what different groups expect of us."
Then there'll be the second Danish-cartoon panel featuring cartoonists. Members of that profession have had differing views about the Muhammad cartoons that stirred protests and riots in various countries. "There are almost as many opinions on the Danish cartoons as there are cartoonists," said Bennett.
The AAEC
convention will also feature several other sessions. One is on newspaper Web sites and what they mean for cartoonists, and another will feature cartoonists discussing how they use things like color and computers in their work.
Other scheduled convention speakers include former U.S. Sen. Gary Hart (D-Col., 1974-86) and National Public Radio's Scott Simon. And Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor of The New Yorker magazine, has agreed to speak at the June 9 Cartoonists Rights Network dinner at the Denver Press Club.
On June 8, the Denver Public Library will open an exhibit of editorial cartoons that's slated to continue during the summer.
