Atex Moves Dover, N.H., Publisher's Circ Off VAX and Onto Windows

By: E&P Staff Geo. J. Foster Co., Dover, N.H., implemented the Microsoft Windows release of World Class Series Circulation from Atex, Reading, England, moving Foster's Daily Democrat, the Laconia Citizen and four weeklies onto industry-standard platforms while maintaining all functionality and adding tools and services.

The upgrade removed outdated VAX hardware and provided new tools (including much-improved reporting) and an easily accessible database.

Instead of buying new systems, Atex provides the option to upgrade systems to the latest release, "while maintaining all existing functionality; adding a graphical user interface; and offering better tools for database maintenance and reporting," Atex Americas Chief Operating Officer Peter Marsh said in a statement.

WCS Circulation customers that upgrade rather than buy new reduce financial investment and retraining; experience faster and easier implementation (with less staff and operations disruption), and can cut hardware and software maintenance costs.

Upgrading an intact WCS system to the Windows release loses no data or features, with all standard data converted automatically as part of the upgrade. The upgrade includes tools for database maintenance and reporting, batch job scheduler, navigation by mouse, and easier installation with new tools, including InstallShield. A Web interface it planned.
