By: E&P Staff During Hurricane Gustav, Atex's Polopoly Web content management solution supported online hurricane coverage at Louisiana State University's Web site www.lsureveille.com.
"This was by far the most dynamic coverage of an event that we've ever been able to execute," Kyle Whitfield, editor of LSU's The Daily Reveille & lsureveille.com sai9d in a statement. "As new reports, pictures, video, maps, etc. became available, we were able to quickly and easily refresh the content on lsureveille.com to keep the college community well informed," from the hurricane's approach to clean up and recovery.
Using all Polopoly CMS features, Whitfield said, the print and online publications enlisted the campus community as citizen journalists and photographers, as well as contributors to a hurricane blog.
"Polopoly's total flexibility allows editors to alter the entire look and feel of their Web sites quickly and, in a situation like the one Hurricane Gustav created last week, rapidly respond to the public's need for interactive news coverage with blogs, videos and photo galleries," Atex North America Digital Operations Vice President Lars Jiborn said.
Louisiana State University is one of 600 colleges and universities that make up Viacom's mtvU/College Media Network. Since June, 25 sites have gone live with Polopoly Web CMS. Polopoly eventually is to power all 600 online publications, which collectively will reach 5.5 million students and an average of 5 million unique users each month.
Broadcast to more than 750 college campuses and via top cable distributors in 700 college communities nationwide, mtvU reaches upwards of 9 million U.S. college students. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, it can be seen in dining areas, fitness centers, lounges and dormitory rooms.
The business also owns and operates the College Media Network of online college newspapers and the RateMyProfessors.com Internet listing of professor ratings.
Atex separately announced that Polopoly has partnered with Bambuser to allow Web enterprises full use of live mobile video broadcasting within the Polopoly publishing system.
The Polopoly content-management suite contains a range of functionality, enabling high-performance personalized services, such as local weather and search services, quick polls and user ratings of articles. Adding Bambuser extends Polopoly's community module, where user-generated content can be managed in coordination with other content.
Bambuser technology aims to provide live audiovisual broadcast opportunities for mobile phones or Web cameras as the broadcasting device.
Integration will provide a ready-made Bambuser element within the Web-based Polopoly user interface, containing all publishing features required by leading online services. Flexible meta-tagging, automatic content re-formatting and fully searchable media archives are all components that will allow clients to include live video reporting with retained stability and control.
