'Atlanta Journal-Constitution' Cuts Distribution, Jobs

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The Atlanta Journal-Constitution plans to reduce its distribution area from 74 to 49 counties, and eliminate 62 jobs, the paper reported Thursday.

In a story on its Web site, the AJC revealed that the move will reduce circulation by about 2.2% on weekdays and 1.9% Sunday.

The news follows a report in Monday's Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX that the paper had seen its daily circulation drop 8.5% to 326,907; with a slip of 5% on Sunday, to 497,149, for the six months ending March 31,2008.

The distribution cutback will take effect June 2, marking the second time in just over a year that the paper has reduced print distribution to cut costs, it reported.

"Counties affected in the latest round are mainly in the northwest corner of the state, along the South Carolina border and northeast of the Columbus area," the paper reported. "After the cuts, the AJC will be distributed in 46 Georgia counties and three in North Carolina."

The paper added that employees losing jobs due to the cutback will be allowed to apply for other openings at the paper.

"The change won't affect the AJC's readership statistics because they are based on a core 28-county market," the paper added.
