By: Janis Mara High-speed Access, E-mail Offered
(Adweek IQ) AT&T payphones, with high-speed Internet connections
and e-mail capability, rolled out this week at airports in New
York, Atlanta, and Dallas. The AT&T Public Phone 2000i costs 25
cents per minute with a four-minute minimum and accepts credit
cards or cash.
The phones have a 12-inch screen and a touch pad in the keyboard
and have been beta-tested at some airports for the last seven
months. The company sells ad space on the video screens.
Based on usage so far, AT&T says it has found the advertising to
be effective in reaching business travelers. The company said a
group of 50 such phones advertising floral site 1-800-flowers.com
generated 500 calls to the company in a recent month, with 1,000
standard pay phones in the same airport generating fewer than 50
calls that month.
