FORT BENNING, Ga. — Amid the pop of gunfire and echoes of explosions, American troops rumbled through streets in tanks Thursday as they engaged insurgents in a hard-fought battle while journalists captured every moment on film.

But this scene didn’t take place in Iraq’s Red Zone or Afghanistan’s Kandahar province. It was a simulated battle at Fort Benning, designed to give field training to members of the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment while also exposing them to members of the media, who are often embedded with troops in foreign wars. Battalion leaders hope the exercise helps troops understand how to react toward reporters while dealing with the stress of being in battle.
