By: E&P Staff Ten signed and framed portraits of "Doonesbury" characters are being donated to the Fisher House Foundation, which will use them to raise money.
Eight of the portraits will be put on eBay for auction starting Wednesday, while the other two will be auctioned Thursday as part of a holiday-giving campaign held by Fisher House and the WMAL radio station in Washington, D.C.
Fisher House provides temporary homes for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and veterans' hospitals.
The 10 characters are printed on archival paper and enclosed in a black wood-and-glass frame. Each is more than 29x26 inches in size and has been personally autographed by cartoonist Garry Trudeau -- with the strip's 35th anniversary date of Oct. 26, 2005, at the bottom. The characters include Mike Doonesbury, Zonker, B.D., Duke, Alex Doonesbury, Barbara Ann Boopstein (Boopsie), Roland Hedley, Joanie Caucus, Mark Slackmeyer, and Kim Rosenthal.
"Doonesbury" is distributed to more than 1,400 newspapers by Universal Press Syndicate.
The donation was announced Tuesday by the syndicate's parent company, Andrews McMeel Universal (AMU), which also owns Andrews McMeel Publishing (AMP). One of AMP's releases this year was Trudeau's "The Long Road Home: One Step at a Time," a "Doonesbury" collection focusing on B.D.'s struggle to recover after losing a leg in Iraq last year (E&P Online, June 1). Proceeds from that book benefit Fisher House.
"Through Vietnam, the Gulf War, and now Iraq, Garry has been using 'Doonesbury' for three decades to get across the age-old truth about war: It's the young people who make the greatest sacrifices," said AMU co-founder John McMeel.
