At two workshops hosted by the Engaging News Project, an organization that researches online audience engagement, digital strategists discussed what audience metrics mattered most in their newsrooms.
During each workshop, the discussion briefly turned to seldom-referenced metrics: audience awareness and knowledge. A newspaper editor argued that journalists have an obligation to measure reader comprehension. A social media editor asked whether newsrooms could solicit feedback from readers about which posts were most useful for understanding news topics.
