By: (AP) Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd. announced Tuesday that Chris Mitchell, a former editor of
The Australian, would return to the company's flagship newspaper as editor-in-chief.
Mitchell was editor of
The Australian from 1992 to 1995 before taking executive oversight as editor-in-chief of
The Courier Mail and
The Sunday Mail newspapers, which are also part of News Ltd.
News Ltd. Chief Executive John Hartigan said he was confident Mitchell "will guide and develop the newspaper into the future."
His return to
The Australian as editor-in-chief came after incumbent David Armstrong decided to step aside.
Hartigan said Armstrong will develop a "major national initiative" for the company, but would not reveal details of the project. He will stay at
The Australian until July 17 to ensure a smooth transition of control, Hartigan said.
Michael Stutchbury remains editor of
The Australian with day-to-day oversight of its operations.
Mitchell first joined
The Australian in 1984 on its business section and later became chief sub-editor, night editor and deputy editor before his promotion to editor.
