FAIRFAX journalists headed in to work today despite the company's announcement that it would push forward with an outsourcing plan, cutting 82 fulltime jobs across key metro mastheads.
Fairfax Media chief Greg Hywood confirmed in an email to staff yesterday that the company would push ahead with plans to outsource sub-editor and designer positions at The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sun-Herald, The Age and The Sunday Age to the Australian Associated Press subsidiary Pagemasters.
In response, Fairfax staff - about 500, according to the journalists' union, the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance - attended stop-work meetings in Sydney and Melbourne yesterday to consider their next move.
