Author of Upcoming 'Calvin and Hobbes' Book Offers Free Sneak Peek

By: E&P Staff The author of a new book on the legendary comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes" and its creator Bill Watterson is offering a free look at one of the book's chapters.

Martell's book -- ?Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and his Revolutionary Comic Strip? -- is being published by Continuum Press, and will be in bookstores Oct. 1.

The deal, reported by The Daily Cartoonist blog, is this: Those interested in a free sample chapter simply need to e-mail a request to lookingforcalvinandhobbes@gmail.com.

Martell is primarily a music journalist, a contributing editor for Filter magazine who has written books about the musicians Dave Matthews Band and Beck. Continuum released this statement about the book the book: "[T]his is as close as we?re ever likely to get to one of America?s most ingenious and intriguing figures -- and a fascinating detective story, at the same time."

Bill Watterson drew "Calvin and Hobbes," from 1985 to 1995. The strip followed the daily adventures of a precocious six-year-old and his stuffed tiger, who comes to life when no one's watching. The last Calvin and Hobbes strip was published on Dec. 31, 1995. Since then, Watterson has kept out of the public eye. He rarely does interviews, and refuses to sell merchandising rights to any of the strip's characters.
