By: E&P Staff During a conference call with analysts and investors Tuesday morning, Gannett executives said that the U.S. newspaper division is holding up better than its broadcast division and United Kingdom properties. Stripping out its UK division, newspaper ad revenue for its domestic properties rose around 4% in September and about 3% for the quarter. Overall, newspaper ad revenue rose 1.1%.
However, the auto and retail categories remain challenging. Gannett President and CEO Craig Dubow said that for the moment, he doesn't expect any positive movement with auto advertising, despite USA Today doing "extremely well" in the category.
Executives also said that the Federated/May merger impacts 12 of Gannett's newspapers. At the same time though, the company announced increased spending by Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart/Sears.
