By: Staff Reports Gannett Combines Newspaper, Broadcast Online Efforts
Following the industry-wide trend of print/broadcast partnerships, Phoenix's
Arizona Republic and KPNX-TV Channel 12 announced Thursday that
azcentral.com will be the shared online presence for both media properties.
The deal allows for Channel 12 News broadcast content to be readily available on
azcentral.com, supplementing online content from The Arizona Republic.
"Having the state's largest newspaper and most-watched TV station join together
will only improve what is already the most-visited local Web site in Arizona,"
said Leon Levitt, executive vice president for digital media at the
Republic. "The addition of streaming video and other content from KPNX
adds a new dimension to azcentral.com's coverage of local news events."
The two media properties began cooperating last fall after KPNX-TV's parent
company, Gannett Co. Inc., acquired Central Newspapers Inc., including The
Arizona Republic. News staffs already collaborate on spot news and special
projects while broadcast cameras are being installed in the Republic's
newsroom.
Both the newspaper and television station will promote azcentral.com as their
single presence online. The company said combined sales efforts now allow
advertisers to purchase space in all three mediums with one phone call.
At the E&P Interactive Newspapers Conference held in Dallas last week, a number
of executives said they expect cross-ownership restrictions to be further
loosened in 2001. The result will be more new-media partnerships between TV
stations, radio stations, and newspapers in local markets.
